The mission of the College of Nursing at Northwest Nazarene University is to provide a quality nursing education and prepare nurses who excel in clinical practice by providing patient and family centered care in the context of Christlike behavior.

BSN Nursing Goal Statement

The goal of the undergraduate nursing program is to equip baccalaureate prepared nurses to practice as nurse leaders who:

  • advocate for individuals, families, and communities through evidence-based care;
  • use critical thinking and clinical judgment to implement evidence-based care;
  • are engaged in and influence health policy in a variety of settings;
  • serve God and humanity with wisdom, integrity, caring, and respect for cultural diversity.

BSN Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Northwest Nazarene University will:

  1. Use theories and concepts from scientific and liberal arts education, as well as professional nursing to inform clinical judgment and nursing practice.
  2. Provide person-centered care which is holistic, individualized, just, respectful, compassionate, coordinated, evidenced-based, and developmentally appropriate in a variety of healthcare settings..
  3. Collaborate with community partners to develop interventions that consider social determinants of health and available resources for improvement of equitable population health outcomes. 
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of the research process, including the ability to critique research and determine its applicability to inform nursing practice.

NURS1100: Pre-Nursing I: Foundations

Credits 2

This is a hybrid course designed for students interested in entering the baccalaureate nursing training program. It will include online modules covering the profession of nursing and medical terminology that students need as they prepare to enter the health profession. The course will include a lab component. Students will meet for a 3-hour lab each week to review online content, and learn and practice foundational nursing skills.

NURS2000: Health Assessment

Credits 3

The focus of this course will be health assessment through the gathering of subjective and objective data through interview and physical examination of the adult client. An introduction to clinical judgement, professional communication skills and documentation related to health assessment will be presented. Older adult, pediatric, and cultural considerations will be addressed for each body system.  This course has a required lab component. The student must register for a section of NURS2000L along with this didactic course. The didactic (NURS2000) course is linked to the lab component (NURS2000L). Both must be successfully completed to progress through the nursing program (please refer to the BSN Student Handbook for specific progression requirements).  (3 credits) Fee: Additional fee required.

This course focuses on the application of critical thinking through use of a clinical judgement framework. It integrates concepts from course prerequisites in the development and implementation of individualized plans of care for clients/patients based on the principles of evidence-based practice. The student will learn basic interventions, medical administration, and critical nursing skills. This course has a required lab component. NURS2120: Resilience in Nursing

Credits 1

Healthcare careers can be physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually demanding. This course examines factors in the life of the nurse that can strengthen their capacity for resilience. It utilizes Crafted 4 Care curriculum designed to help the student develop meaningful virtues and spiritual space practices from a Christian worldview. The course is taught in a hybrid format. Individual, contemplative work will be completed online with a required classroom component that explores the ongoing development of virtues and spiritual spaces in the life of the nurse.

NURS3010: The Childbearing Family

Credits 3

Focuses on health promotion for the perinatal client and family including the newborn in the acute care and community setting. Evidence based nursing care of the childbearing families with application of pharmacology, physiology and pathophysiology. Women's health is a component of this course. This class has a required clinical component. The student must register for a section of NURS3010L along with this didactic course. Clinical judgment skills are applied to selected acute and chronic disease processes in the care of adult patients and their families. Critical thinking and clinical reasoning are emphasized as part of providing safe, quality nursing care that is patient centered, evidence based, and interprofessionally collaborative. NURS3050: Pharmacology I

This course explores pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and age span considerations in pharmacology. The mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, potential adverse effects and nursing implications of major drug classifications are examined through the consideration of prototype drugs. Pharmacotherapy of the gastrointestinal system, autonomic nervous system, respiratory system, and anti-infective agents are covered.  Complementary and alternative therapies are included. Pharmacology of body defenses, infectious and neoplastic diseases, gastrointestinal system and endocrine system are covered.

NURS3060: Nutrition Management

Nutrition management is a key component of health promotion and healing. The skilled registered nurse must be knowledgeable in the rationale for and application of nutrition concepts in management of both chronic and acute health conditions. 

NURS3100: Chronic Care I

Credits 3

Best practices in the management of chronic conditions across the lifespan start with an understanding of patient group demographic identifiers and optimal health outcomes. This course examines the most common chronic health disorders from childhood to older adult. The student will discover and apply best practices in the day-to-day care management of these conditions. The student will develop teaching/learning plans that promote quality of life outcomes for clients/patients living with these conditions. The student will also develop introductory therapeutic communication skills. This course has a required clinical/SIM/Lab component. Mental health conditions are a growing demographic in all patient care settings. In this course students will develop competency in assessing and planning care for patients with mental health conditions. Nurses are often the first on the healthcare team to encounter patients who have become agitated, combative, self-injurious, suicidal, grieving, anxious, depressed, and more. Mastery of the therapeutic communication skills necessary to manage these encounters is vital for the generalist nurse. The course will have didactic and clinical learning opportunities for developing these skills. Both the didactic and clinical components must be passed successfully to progress through the nursing program. Clinical assignments will be published the first week of class. (2 credits didactic and 1 credit clinical/sim)

This course provides a foundation in population health including assessment and health intervention for culturally diverse and vulnerable populations and local communities. Students will apply concepts of epidemiology to community health events. Students will apply principles of disaster response. The student will be introduced to trauma and ICU levels of care. Critical thinking leading to clinical judgement in complex health encounters will include application of evidence-based practice and management of critical health conditions in high-acuity settings. Student's clinical work will include practice within a Team model of nursing, tele-medicine, and multidisciplinary collaboration. This course has a required clinical component. The student must register for a section of NURS3310L along with this didactic course. The didactic (NURS3310) course is linked to the clinical component (NURS 3310L). NURS3320: Community Health II

Credits 2

This course will build on concepts taught in Community Health I by adding a global perspective. It will consider the work of the World Health Organization and compare and contrast community health assessment between western and non-western communities. Students will consider the impact of health policy and health economics on the health of nations and how the health of populations impacts health policy and economics.

NURS3500: Acute Maternal/Child Nursing

This course focuses on the care of the pre-natal client and family, birth process, newborn, and acute pediatric care. Assessment and evidence-based interventional nursing care of the childbearing family and families with young children. Students will apply course content to the care of families, infants, and children in the acute care setting. Clinical assignments will be published the first week of class. (2 credits didactic and 1 credit clinical/sim)

The impact of multifactorial complex health needs of the adult client and their family will be examined. Clinical reasoning, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and nursing management of clients pertaining to complex health needs will be explored within high acuity settings for adults. Multidisciplinary collaborative care, transitional care, and end of life issues will be incorporated. Clinical/Simulation Lab component. Fee: Additional fee required.

Focus on the development and improvement of leadership and management skills as applied within professional nursing practice. Topics will include quality, organizational cultures, leadership and management styles. Students will apply team building concepts through negotiation, collaboration, coordination and conflict resolution exercises. Additionally, students will be provided a thorough review of healthcare systems and policy.

This course will identify, develop and improve leadership and management skills for the nursing professional in their practice. Topics will include: leadership/management styles, organizational culture, quality and many more. Learners will build/apply team building concepts through negotiation, collaboration and conflict resolution exercises. They will also review healthcare systems, legislative as well as other policy impacts on the nursing profession.

NURS4040: Transition to Professional Nursing Practice/Capstone

This capstone course facilitates the transition from student to graduate professional nurse and fosters professional growth and development. Students will apply knowledge and skills acquired throughout the major under the mentorship of a nurse preceptor. Students review and prepare for the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX). The course assists majors to reflect on their educational experience and professional development in light of the institutional values of Northwest Nazarene University. Clinical preceptorship of 180 hours. Fee: Additional fee required.

NURS4040L: Transition to Professional Nursing Practice/Capstone: Clinical/SIM/Lab

This course is a capstone Clinical/SIM/Lab component linked to the NURS4040 didactic course. In this capstone clinical experience, the student must demonstrate mastery of all Nursing Program outcomes taught throughout the entire BSN Program. The primary learning synthesis and assessment activity is designed as a final 1:1 nurse-student preceptorship of 180 hours in a clinical setting. Students must successfully demonstrate mastery of all competencies required throughout the Nursing Program (as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook). If competencies in either one of these components (NURS4040 or NURS4040L) are not met, or if the demonstrated clinical experience is paused due to identified failure to demonstrate mastery of competencies, both NURS4040 and NURS4040L must be repeated and passed successfully before the student is able to progress towards graduation from the nursing program.

This course will examine professional ethical standards in healthcare. It will include a review of the traditional theories of and the contemporary ethical applications to healthcare. The focus is the integration of ethical responsibility and the medical environment.

NURS4094: Special Topics in Nursing

A study of special topics related to current issues and trends in nursing. Subject matter may change to meet the needs of the learner.

NURS4140: NCLEX Prep Course

Credits 3

This course aids the student in preparation for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam. Students will review test-taking strategies, the unique item types they will encounter, complete a comprehensive set of content practice exams, and experience a live review with an exam review expert.

 

Prerequisites

Prerequisites: All degree requirements outside of the final semester of nursing must be completed in order to register for this course. Students with one remaining non-nursing course may petition to take this course. Permission of the student’s advisor is required.
