NURS2000: Health Assessment

This course will focus on health assessment through gathering subjective and objective data through interviews and physical examination of the adult client. An introduction to clinical judgment, professional communication skills, and documentation related to health assessment will be presented. Older adult, pediatric, and cultural considerations will be addressed for each body system.  This course has a required lab component. The student must register for a section of NURS2000L along with this didactic course. Both must be successfully completed to progress through the nursing program, as outlined in the BSN handbook.

It is designed to provide hands-on learning activities in which students will be required to demonstrate mastery in the application of concepts related to the nursing health assessment that is taught in NURS2000. A variety of hands-on learning modalities may be used in a lab setting. Students must successfully master the competencies required in both NURS2000 and NURS2000L. If competencies in either one of these components are not met, the entire set must be completed successfully before the student qualifies to progress in the nursing program, as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook. This is a pass/fail course.

NURS2005: Fundamentals of Nursing

Credits 4

This course focuses on the application of critical thinking through the use of a clinical judgment framework. It integrates concepts from course prerequisites in the development and implementation of individualized plans of care for clients/patients based on the principles of evidence-based practice. The student will learn essential interventions, medication administration, and critical nursing skills. This course has a required lab component. The student must register for a section of NURS2005L along with this didactic course. Both courses must be completed to progress through the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook.

This course is a Lab component linked to the NURS2005 didactic course. It is designed to provide hands-on learning activities in which students will be required to demonstrate mastery in applying fundamental concepts related to clinical judgment and basic nursing skills introduced in NURS2005. A variety of hands-on learning modalities may be used in a lab setting. Students must successfully master the competencies required in both NURS2005 and NURS2005L. If competencies in either one of these components are not met, both courses must be repeated before the student qualifies to progress in the nursing program.

NURS2120: Resilience in Nursing

Credits 2

Healthcare careers can be physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually demanding. This course examines factors in the life of the nurse that can strengthen their capacity for resilience. It utilizes the Crafted 4 Care curriculum, designed to help the student develop meaningful virtues and spiritual space practices from a Christian worldview. The course is taught in an online format. Individual, contemplative work will be completed online that explores the ongoing development of virtues and spiritual spaces in the life of the nurse. Formal admission to the BSN program.

NURS3050: Pharmacology I

Credits 2

This course explores pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and age span considerations in pharmacology. The mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, potential adverse effects, and nursing implications of major drug classifications are examined through the consideration of prototype drugs. Pharmacotherapy of the gastrointestinal system, autonomic nervous system, respiratory system, and anti-infective agents is covered.  Complementary and alternative therapies are included. Pharmacology of body defenses, infectious diseases, and the gastrointestinal system.

This course continues to build on concepts introduced in Pharmacology I.  The mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, potential adverse effects and nursing implications of major drug classifications are examined through the consideration of prototype drugs.  Pharmacology of viral and neoplastic diseases, the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and endocrine system are covered.

Nutrition management is a key component of health promotion and healing. The skilled registered nurse must be knowledgeable in the rationale for and application of nutrition concepts in management of both chronic and acute health conditions.

NURS3100: Chronic Care I

Credits 3

Best practices in the management of chronic conditions across the lifespan start with an understanding of patient group demographic identifiers and optimal health outcomes. This course examines the most common chronic health disorders from childhood to older adulthood. The student will discover and apply best practices in the day-to-day care management of these conditions. The student will develop teaching/learning plans promoting quality of life outcomes for clients/patients with these conditions. The student will also develop introductory therapeutic communication skills. This course requires a clinical/SIM/Lab component. The student must register for a section of NURS3100L along with this didactic course. The didactic (NURS3100) course is linked to the clinical/SIM/Lab component (NURS 3100L). Both must be successfully completed to progress through the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook.

This introduction to acute care course examines the components of clinical judgment for managing care for the patient/client with one medical diagnosis. The student will gain clinical judgment skills to ensure safe, quality, patient-centered, evidence-based, and inter-professionally collaborative nursing care. This course has a required clinical component. Both NURS3110 and NURS3110L must be successfully completed to progress through the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook.

NURS3200: Chronic Care II

Mental health conditions are a growing demographic in all patient care settings. In this course, students will develop competency in assessing and planning care for patients with mental health conditions. Nurses are often the first on the healthcare team to encounter patients who have become agitated, combative, self-injurious, suicidal, grieving, anxious, depressed, and more. Mastery of the therapeutic communication skills necessary to manage these encounters is vital for the generalist nurse. This course has a required clinical component. Both must be successfully completed to progress through the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Nursing Handbook.

Most patient populations experience two or more health diagnoses or co-morbidities. In this course, the student's level of clinical judgement will be challenged to integrate knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, and other disciplines into care management of patients with more than one diagnosis. Both the didactic and clinical components must be passed successfully to progress through the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook.

This course provides a foundation in population health, including assessment and health intervention for culturally diverse and vulnerable populations and local communities. Students will apply concepts of epidemiology to community health events. Students will use the principles of disaster response. The student must register for a section of NURS3220L along with this didactic course. The didactic (NURS3220) course is linked to the clinical component (NURS 3220L). Both must be successfully completed to progress through the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook.

NURS3310: Acute Care III

The student will be introduced to critical/high acuity levels of care. Critical thinking leading to clinical judgment in complex health encounters will include applying evidence-based practice and managing critical health conditions in high-acuity settings (ICU, ED, Trauma, and so forth). Students' clinical work will include practice within a team model of nursing, telemedicine, and multidisciplinary collaboration. This course has a required clinical component. The student must register for NURS3310L along with this didactic course. Both must be successfully completed to progress through the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook.

This course will build on concepts taught in Community Health I by adding a global perspective. It will consider the work of the World Health Organization and compare and contrast community health assessments between Western and non-Western communities. Students will consider the impact of health policy and health economics on the health of nations and how the health of populations impacts health policy and economics. This is an online course with a clinical component.

NURS3500: Acute Maternal/Child Nursing

Credits 3

This course focuses on the care of the pre-natal client and family, the birth process, newborn, and acute pediatric care. Assessment and evidence-based interventional nursing care of the childbearing family and families with children. Students will apply course content to caring for families, infants, and children in the acute care setting. This course is linked to NURS3500L. Students must successfully master the competencies required in both courses in order to progress in the nursing program as outlined in the BSN Student Handbook.

NURS4040: Transition to Professional Nursing Practice/Capstone

Credits 6

This capstone course facilitates the transition from student to graduate professional nurse and fosters professional growth and development. Students will apply knowledge and skills acquired throughout the major under the mentorship of a nurse preceptor. The course assists majors in reflecting on their educational experience and professional development in light of the institutional values of Northwest Nazarene University. This course has a clinical preceptorship of 180 hours.

NURS4040L: Transition to Professional Nursing Practice/Capstone: Clinical/SIM/Lab

Credits 0

This course is a capstone Clinical/SIM/Lab component linked to the NURS4040 didactic course. In this capstone clinical experience, the student must demonstrate mastery of all Nursing Program outcomes taught throughout the entire BSN Program, which have not yet been mastered. The primary learning synthesis and assessment activity is designed as a final 1:1 nurse-student preceptorship of 180 hours in a clinical setting. Students must successfully demonstrate mastery of all competencies not yet mastered that are required throughout the Nursing Program. If competencies in either one of these components (NURS4040 or NURS4040L) are not met, or if the demonstrated clinical experience is paused due to identified failure to demonstrate mastery of competencies, both courses (NURS4040 and NURS4040L) must be repeated and passed successfully before the student can progress towards graduation from the nursing program. This is a pass/fail course.

This course will examine professional ethical standards in healthcare. It will include a review of the traditional theories of and the contemporary ethical applications to healthcare, along with the Biblical foundations of truth. The focus is on the integration of ethical responsibility and the medical environment. This is an online course.

NURS4140: NCLEX Prep Course

Credits 3

This course aids the student in preparation for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam. Students will review test-taking strategies, the unique item types they will encounter, complete a comprehensive set of content practice exams, and experience a comprehensive review with an exam review expert.
