Mental health conditions are a growing demographic in all patient care settings. In this course students will develop competency in assessing and planning care for patients with mental health conditions. Nurses are often the first on the healthcare team to encounter patients who have become agitated, combative, self-injurious, suicidal, grieving, anxious, depressed, and more. Mastery of the therapeutic communication skills necessary to manage these encounters is vital for the generalist nurse. The course will have didactic and clinical learning opportunities for developing these skills. Both the didactic and clinical components must be passed successfully to progress through the nursing program. Clinical assignments will be published the first week of class. (2 credits didactic and 1 credit clinical/sim)
