A study of thought and culture from the twentieth century to the present. Attention will be paid to existentialism, high modernism, the World Wars and the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and postmodernity; readings may include figures such as Sigmund Freud, W. E. B. Du Bois, Virginia Woolf, Simone Weil, Primo Levi, Martin Luther King Jr., Toni Morrison, and Jorge Luis Borges.
